If you need a clear, written record of a tree's condition - for a planning application, a house sale, an insurance query, or just peace of mind after a storm - a proper tree survey gives you that record from someone qualified to make the call. We carry out tree surveys, written reports and one-off safety inspections across Nottingham and Derbyshire, from a single garden check through to a full Advanced Survey across a development site.

Every survey is carried out in person by George Beck, an NPTC qualified arborist, and the written report that follows sets out species, condition, any hazards found and what, if anything, needs to happen next. If the report identifies work that needs doing, we can quote for the actual tree work separately, once you've seen the findings and decided how to proceed.

From Species ID to TPO Checks: What a Survey Actually Includes

  • On-site assessment by an NPTC qualified arborist covering species identification, condition, size, age and hazard potential
  • Choice of Basic, Advanced, Ecological or Legal & Compliance survey depending on what the findings are needed for
  • Drone tree survey option for tall, dense or hard-to-reach canopies where a ground-based check alone can't give the full picture
  • A written report setting out findings, risk rating and maintenance or preservation recommendations
  • Checking for Tree Preservation Order or Conservation Area status where a survey identifies protected trees
  • Guidance on prioritising any follow-up work flagged in the report

Not Included / Costed Separately

  • The tree work itself - pruning, felling, crown reduction and so on - recommended in a report is a separate job, quoted and booked once you've seen the findings
  • Formally submitting a TPO or Conservation Area application isn't part of the survey fee - we can advise, but the paperwork and liaison with the council is arranged separately
  • Specialist lab-based testing, such as soil or root decay sampling, isn't included as standard and would only be recommended in the report if visual signs pointed to it being worthwhile
  • Very large sites or multiple properties are scoped and quoted individually rather than at a flat rate

How a Survey Goes From First Call to Finished Report

  1. Tell us what the survey is for -- A quick call or email saying whether this is for a house purchase, a planning application, a TPO check or a post-storm safety concern decides which type of survey you actually need and how quickly the site visit needs to happen.
  2. We confirm survey type and access -- Basic, Advanced, Ecological or Legal & Compliance - we agree which level of detail your situation calls for, and whether a drone will be needed to get a proper look at tall or dense canopy before a date is booked.
  3. On-site inspection -- George, or another NPTC qualified team member, walks the site identifying each tree by species and checking condition, structure and any visible defects, noting anything that needs a closer aerial look.
  4. Drone flight where the canopy demands it -- For crowns too tall or dense to check properly from the ground, we fly a drone survey over the site to look for deadwood, storm damage or early disease signs before deciding if a climbing inspection is also needed.
  5. Written report delivered -- Findings are written up with a risk rating and recommendations, in a format you can hand to a council, solicitor, lender or insurer without needing it explained further.
  6. Follow-up work quoted separately -- If the report flags work that needs doing, we quote for it once you've had a chance to read the findings - there's no pressure to book anything on the spot.

What Drives the Price of a Survey or Report

Pricing depends on the type of survey needed, how many trees are involved, and how accessible the site is - a single garden inspection is a different job to an Advanced Survey across a development plot with dozens of trees to individually record. A Basic Tree Survey on a typical residential garden generally costs less than an Advanced, Ecological or Legal & Compliance Survey, since those involve more detailed data collection and a longer written report. We offer free quotes, but because cost depends on what's actually on site, we'll usually need to see the trees in person, or review drone survey footage for a hard-to-reach canopy, before confirming a fixed price. Get in touch and describe what the survey is for - a house purchase, a planning application, a storm-damage check - and we'll give you a realistic figure before you book anything.

Basic, Advanced, Ecological or Legal & Compliance - Which Survey Fits

Survey Type Best Suited To What's Assessed
Basic Tree Survey Homeowners and small property managers wanting a general health check Visible signs of distress or disease, with basic care recommendations
Advanced Tree Survey Larger estates, developments and municipal projects Species, age, condition and hazard analysis for planning and risk decisions
Ecological Tree Survey Environmental impact assessments and biodiversity-sensitive sites Wildlife habitats, biodiversity value and conservation status
Legal & Compliance Tree Survey Planning applications, Tree Preservation Orders, boundary disputes Compliance findings and expert input for TPO and legal matters

Reports Written by an Arborist Who Actually Climbs Trees

Tree Survey Nottingham is run by George Beck, an NPTC qualified arborist with over 20 years' experience working with trees across Nottingham, Derby and the surrounding areas - ask for George directly and the person who signs off your report is the same person who walked the site, not a desk-based analyst working from photographs. The team holds City & Guilds NPTC Certificates of Competence spanning ground-based chainsaw work through to Emergency Treework Planning (0039-36) and specific competence in Individual Windblown Trees (0039-37), so when a report flags a hazardous limb, root movement or a tree at risk of failure, that judgement comes from someone qualified to make the same call from up in the canopy, not just from ground level. We're also fully covered by public liability and employers' liability insurance, with documentation available if a mortgage lender, insurer or local authority needs to see it before relying on the report.

Site Visits Across Nottingham, Derbyshire and Beyond

We're based at 20 Prince St in Long Eaton and carry out surveys, reports and inspections across Nottingham and the wider area out to roughly 15-25 miles, including West Bridgford, Wollaton, Beeston, Bramcote, Ruddington, Edwalton, Radcliffe on Trent, Bingham, Lowdham, Burton Joyce and Ravenshead, plus the Derbyshire towns of Ilkeston, Heanor, Ripley and Alfreton. We also take on survey work further out towards Mansfield, Newark-on-Trent, Southwell and Worksop. Older residential streets and conservation areas - the kind found around The Park Estate in Nottingham - often carry Tree Preservation Orders, so a survey there needs to check protected status alongside the tree's physical condition. If you're not sure whether your postcode falls within our usual coverage, get in touch and we'll confirm before arranging a site visit.

Book Your Survey Before the Deadline Catches Up With You

Whether you're working to a mortgage completion date, a council deadline on a planning application, or you just want written confirmation that a tree is safe after high winds, the sooner you book a site visit the sooner you have a report in hand. Get in touch and tell us what the survey is for, and we'll fit the visit around whatever timeline you're working to.

Questions People Ask Before Booking a Survey

What's the difference between a tree survey, a tree report and a tree inspection?

They overlap but aren't quite the same thing. A tree survey is the on-site assessment itself - the arborist walking the site, identifying species, condition and hazards across some or all of the trees present. A tree inspection usually refers to the same kind of physical checks but focused on a single tree or a specific concern, such as storm damage or a pre-purchase check. A tree report is the written document produced from either one, setting out findings, risk rating and recommendations in a form you can pass to a council, insurer or solicitor.

Do I need a tree survey for a planning application?

Most councils will ask for a tree survey if there are trees on or near a proposed development site, particularly in a Conservation Area or where a Tree Preservation Order applies. An Advanced or Legal & Compliance Survey is usually the right level for this, since it covers the detail planning officers typically want to see. Tell us what your council has requested and we'll advise on the right survey type before booking.

How long does a typical survey or inspection take on site?

It depends on the number of trees and how accessible they are. A single garden inspection can take under an hour, while an Advanced Survey across a larger site takes longer because each tree is individually measured, checked and logged. We'll give you a realistic estimate for both site time and report turnaround when you book.

What is a drone tree survey and when would I need one?

For tall trees, dense canopies or crowns that are difficult or unsafe to fully assess from the ground, we can carry out a drone tree survey alongside the standard ground-based assessment. It lets us get a proper look at the upper canopy - deadwood, storm damage, early disease signs - before deciding whether a closer aerial inspection by a climber is needed.

Will a survey tell me if a tree has a Tree Preservation Order on it?

Checking protected status is part of what we look at, especially on surveys tied to planning or building work. If a tree turns out to carry a TPO or sits within a Conservation Area, that's flagged clearly in the report so you know before any work is planned. Submitting the actual TPO application, if one's needed, is arranged as a separate step.

I just want peace of mind after a storm - do I need a full survey?

Not necessarily. A single tree inspection is usually enough to check for storm damage, cracked limbs or root movement following high winds, and it's quicker and less involved than a full multi-tree survey. If the inspection finds something that needs urgent attention, we'll talk through the options for making it safe.

Does the survey include any actual tree work if something needs doing?

No. The survey and report identify what needs attention and how urgent it is, but any pruning, felling or other physical work is a separate job, quoted once you've seen the findings. Keeping the two separate means you get an independent set of findings first, then decide what to do about them - we can then quote the actual tree work if you want us to carry it out.

Can a tree report be used for a mortgage application or insurance claim?

Yes - that's one of the more common reasons people commission one. Lenders and insurers often want written confirmation of a tree's condition and any risk it poses before they'll proceed with a sale or a claim. Our reports are written with that audience in mind, and our public liability and employers' liability insurance documentation is available on request alongside the report.
