Conifer Removal, Trimming & Pruning Nottingham
- NPTC Qualified
- Stump grinding available
- 24/7 Emergency
Conifers grow fast, and a hedge or specimen tree that looked tidy last spring can be blocking light and views within a couple of seasons in Nottingham's gardens. George Beck and the team bring NPTC-qualified chainsaw and aerial rigging tickets to every conifer job, from a single leylandii taken down over a fence line to grinding out a whole run of hedge stumps ahead of a landscaping project. If you're weighing up a full removal against a cut-back, our hedge trimming and stump removal pages cover the related work in more detail.
From a Single Leylandii to a Whole Hedge Row: What's Included
- Full felling and removal of individual conifers, rows or whole hedges, including tall leylandii taken down in sections where there's no room to fell whole
- Conifer hedge trimming and shaping to a set height and width, with arisings chipped and cleared from site
- Crown and canopy pruning of individual conifer specimens to keep growth in check without cutting back into bare wood
- Conifer stump grinding, taking the stump and surface roots down below grade with a petrol stump grinder
- Clearance of multiple conifers ahead of a landscaping, extension or building project
- Pest and disease checks for common conifer problems such as root rot, honey fungus, scale insects and cypress aphid
- Checking whether a conifer is covered by a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a Conservation Area, with application support if consent is needed via our TPO and Conservation Area service
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Replanting or landscaping the area once conifers are cleared - we leave the ground level and tidy, but planting is a separate job
- Filing a formal High Hedges Act complaint with the local council - that's a process between you, your neighbour and the council, though we can advise on the practical side of a reduction
- Cutting a neglected conifer hedge back into bare brown wood and expecting regrowth - conifers won't reshoot from old wood, so a badly overgrown hedge may need staged reduction or removal instead of a single hard cut
- Taking away large sawn timber for milling or keeping as firewood logs beyond standard site clearance - let us know in advance if you'd like logs left rather than removed
Getting a Conifer Job Booked, Cut and Cleared
- Enquiry and photos -- Call or send us photos of the conifer or hedge along with its rough height and location - most jobs get an initial steer on scope and timescale the same day.
- Site visit and inspection -- George or a team member inspects the conifers on site, checks the crown and root area for disease or dead wood, and confirms whether a Tree Preservation Order, Conservation Area or High Hedges Act issue applies.
- Written quote -- You get an itemised quote that separates felling, trimming, hedge cutting and stump grinding, so you can see exactly what each part of the job costs before booking.
- The cutting work -- Tall or awkwardly placed conifers are taken down in sections using ropes and rigging, with ground crew clearing brash as we go; hedges and lower growth are trimmed and shaped with chainsaws and hedge cutters.
- Stump grinding -- Where it's included, the stump and surface roots are ground down below grade with a petrol stump grinder once the tree is down.
- Clean-up and sign-off -- Arisings are chipped or bagged and taken away, the site is swept, and you check the finished result before we leave.
Conifer Job Pricing: What Actually Moves the Number
Conifer pricing moves more than most tree work, because a hedge trim, a single leylandii felled whole, and a run of mature conifers dismantled in sections over a fence are three different jobs even in the same garden. What tends to drive the price is whether a tree can be felled in one piece or has to be taken down section by section on ropes, how much timber and brash there is to chip and clear, and whether stump grinding is wanted in the same visit or left for later - the comparison below gives a rough feel for how time on site scales across trimming, felling and grinding. Because access and the condition of each conifer only really show up once someone's stood next to it, we give a written, itemised quote after a site visit rather than a price over the phone, so you can see felling, hedge cutting and stump grinding costed separately before you book.
Trim, Fell or Grind: Choosing the Right Conifer Job
| Service | What's involved | Typical time on site | When it suits your conifers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conifer pruning and trimming | Shaping live growth back to a set line, kept within the green needle growth | Half a day to a full day | Overgrown but healthy conifers you want to keep and control |
| Conifer hedge trimming | Cutting a hedge back to height and width, arisings cleared and bagged from site | A few hours to a day depending on hedge length | Regular boundary or screening hedges needing a scheduled cut |
| Full conifer removal | Felling in sections with ropes and rigging, or straight felling where there's room | Half a day to two days per tree, more for a row | Dead, diseased or storm-damaged conifers, or land clearance |
| Stump grinding | Grinding the stump and surface roots down below ground level with a petrol grinder | 30-60 minutes per stump once on site | After felling, when you want the ground clear for turf, planting or building |
The Rigging Tickets That Matter When a Conifer Comes Down in Sections
When a mature leylandii or an old cypress screen has to come down in pieces over a fence, shed or greenhouse rather than felled whole, it's the aerial rigging and climbing tickets that make that safe, not just a bigger chainsaw. George Beck is an NPTC qualified arborist with over 20 years' experience caring for trees across Nottingham, Derby and the surrounding areas, and the team holds City & Guilds NPTC Certificates of Competence covering felling small trees and branch removal and crown breakdown through to aerial tree pruning and rigging - exactly the combination a conifer taken down in sections calls for. The business is small and locally based at 20 Prince St in Long Eaton, so you deal with George directly rather than a call centre, and full public liability and employers' liability insurance documentation is available on request. Karl Hall in Alfreton had trees cut back and hedges trimmed and described the team as fast and efficient, leaving the garden tidier than before, and Jennifer Leahy in Long Eaton had ivy and unwanted growth cleared quickly despite rainy weather - the kind of everyday hedge and screening work that conifer jobs usually involve.
Areas We Cover, and How Local Planting History Shapes the Job
We're based at 20 Prince St in Long Eaton and cover conifer work across Nottingham and out to Derby, working within roughly 15-25 miles of the city. A lot of what we see reflects when an area was built: in the 1970s and 80s estates around Wollaton, Beeston and Bramcote, leylandii and Leyland cypress were often planted as a quick-growing boundary screen and are now thirty-plus years old, well past the point where a hard cut-back will reshoot cleanly. Mature gardens in West Bridgford and The Park Estate tend to have larger, older specimen conifers that were never kept to a set height, so a straight fell in one piece often isn't possible and the tree has to come down in rigged sections over patios, greenhouses or a neighbour's fence. Out towards Ripley, Heanor and Alfreton on the Derbyshire side, plots on the old mining-village terraces are frequently narrow and sloped, which changes how we access a hedge line and where brash and timber can be staged for removal. Further out to Ruddington, Edwalton, Hucknall, Mansfield, Newark-on-Trent and Southwell, we mostly see standard boundary and screening hedges rather than large specimen trees, so those jobs tend to be quicker hedge-trimming visits.
Conifer Removal, Trimming and TPO Questions Answered
Do I need permission to remove or cut back a conifer hedge in Nottingham?
Most garden conifers can be pruned or removed without permission, but there are two situations to check first: if the tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order or sits within a Conservation Area, or if a hedge is being reduced under a formal High Hedges Act complaint from a neighbour. We check TPO and Conservation Area status as part of our site visit, and can help prepare an application if consent is needed - see our TPO and Conservation Area application page. A High Hedges Act complaint itself is a matter between you, your neighbour and the local council, not something we file on your behalf.
Can an overgrown conifer hedge be cut back hard, or does it need to come out?
It depends how far the hedge has been let go. Conifers can be reduced back into the green growth and will reshoot from there, but they have very little capacity to regrow from bare brown wood, so a hedge left untrimmed for years often can't be cut back to the size you want without leaving dead patches. In that situation, staged reduction over a couple of seasons or full removal and replanting is usually the more honest answer than a single hard cut.
What time of year is best for conifer trimming?
Conifers can generally be trimmed at most points in the growing season, though we tend to avoid the hardest cuts in the depths of winter frost or during the main spring nesting season, in line with normal hedge-cutting good practice. Regular, lighter trims once or twice a year keep growth in check far better than an occasional drastic cut-back.
Do you offer emergency conifer removal after storm damage?
Yes. We're available seven days a week, with 24/7 emergency cover for storm-damaged, split or leaning conifers that have become a hazard - see our emergency tree services page. A leaning or storm-snapped conifer can be more dangerous to fell than it looks, because the stored tension isn't always obvious from the ground.
Is stump grinding included in a conifer removal quote, or is it extra?
We quote felling and stump grinding as separate line items because not everyone wants the stump ground out straight away - some customers get the tree down first and deal with the stump later, or leave it as an edging feature. If you know you want the ground cleared for turf, planting or building, tell us at the quote stage and we'll price both together.
What happens to the branches and timber once a conifer is removed?
As standard, we chip the brash and take the arisings away with us so the garden is left clear and tidy - that's a routine part of the job, not an add-on. Larger conifer timber isn't usually worth much as milled wood, but if you'd like logs left for firewood, let us know before the job and we can normally leave a stack rather than take it all away.
How much does conifer removal or hedge trimming cost?
There's no single price because a light trim, a full felling job and stump grinding are priced separately and depend on height, access and how much timber needs clearing. We give a written, itemised quote after seeing the job on site rather than guessing over the phone, so you know exactly what each part of the work costs before you commit.
Can a whole row of conifers be removed at once, or does each one need a separate visit?
A whole hedge line or row of leylandii is usually done in a single visit - it's more efficient for us and cheaper for you than booking separate call-outs. We'll sequence the felling so ground crew can keep clearing brash while the next tree comes down, then grind stumps along the row in one pass if that's part of the job.
Don't Let an Overgrown Conifer Turn Into a Bigger Job
Because conifers won't regrow from old brown wood, the longer a hedge or specimen tree is left, the more likely a light trim turns into a full reduction or removal further down the line. Get in touch for a free quote and honest advice on whether trimming, pruning or removal is the right call for your conifers.
