Tree Pruning & Trimming Nottingham

Pruning and trimming work on this page is carried out by George Beck, an NPTC qualified arborist with over 20 years' experience working on trees across Nottingham, Derby and the surrounding areas. If a branch or tree needs sorting urgently because of storm damage rather than as part of a planned prune, the 24/7 emergency tree service covers that instead. For fruit trees specifically, the separate fruit tree pruning page covers the different timing and technique that apples, pears and stone fruit need compared with ornamental trees.
What's Included in a Pruning or Trimming Visit
- Crown reduction to bring height and spread down to a safer or more manageable size, as with the 20% reduction carried out on a mature 25m copper beech in The Park Estate
- Crown thinning to remove selected small branches and let more light and air through the canopy
- Crown lifting to raise the lowest branches clear of a drive, path, lawn or roofline
- Deadwooding to remove dead, dying or diseased branches before they become a hazard
- Formative pruning on young trees to build a strong structure early on
- Pollarding and coppicing for woodland, boundary and hedgerow trees
- Fruit tree pruning for apples, pears and stone fruit, timed for yield as well as health
- Hedge trimming carried out alongside tree work, as on a recent job in Alfreton cutting back trees and hedges together
- Ivy and climber clearance from trunks and canopies
- Checking whether a tree has a TPO or sits in a Conservation Area before work starts, with support preparing the council application if consent is needed
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Full tree felling or removal, which uses different technique and equipment and is covered separately rather than as part of a pruning visit
- Stump grinding once a tree has come down
- Drone tree survey, offered as a separate inspection for tall or hard-to-access crowns rather than included automatically in every pruning quote
- Work on a tree with a TPO or in a Conservation Area cannot start until the council has approved the application, which adds time to the schedule ahead of any cutting
How a Pruning or Trimming Job Runs, Start to Finish
- Get in touch -- Call or request a free quote, describing the tree or trees, roughly why work is needed (overgrown, overhanging a building, storm-damaged, or just due a scheduled tidy), and where the site is.
- Site assessment -- An NPTC-qualified arborist visits to look at the tree's condition, species and size, check whether it has a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a Conservation Area, and work out access for ropes, rigging or a platform.
- Written quote agreed -- Scope and price are confirmed before anything starts. If the tree is protected, work can't begin until the council has approved any TPO or Conservation Area application.
- Access and safety set-up -- Climbing gear, ropes and harnesses, or a mobile platform for taller or awkward crowns, are set up on the day, and the work area is cordoned off.
- Pruning or trimming carried out -- Cuts are made using correct arboricultural technique for the size and species of tree -- for example, no more than around a quarter of the crown removed in one go on a reduction, with individual cuts kept to roughly a third of the limb's diameter, as with the copper beech reduced in The Park Estate.
- Clear-up and sign-off -- Arisings are chipped and removed, the site is left tidy, and there's a final walk-round to check you're happy with the result before we leave.
What Drives the Price of a Prune
There's no single price for pruning or trimming because it depends on the tree's size and species, how much reduction or thinning is needed, how many trees are involved, and how easy the site is to access -- a small garden fruit tree costs a good deal less than a mature specimen like the 25m copper beech reduced for a client in The Park Estate, which needed rigging and a full day's work. Hedge trimming done alongside tree work, ivy clearance, and any Tree Preservation Order or Conservation Area paperwork can also change the final figure. Quotes are free, but the accurate price comes from an arborist looking at the actual tree on site rather than a phone estimate from a description or photo.
Qualified Arborist or General Gardener - What's the Real Difference

George Beck's NPTC Credentials, Not Just a Sales Pitch
Pruning and crown work here is signed off by George Beck, who holds City & Guilds NPTC Certificates of Competence across the range needed for this kind of job -- including the Level 3 certificates for Aerial Tree Pruning (0039-31), Branch Removal and Crown Breakdown (0039-25) and Aerial Tree Rigging (0039-32), which cover the climbing and cutting work involved in reducing a large crown safely. That's the kind of job David King brought the team in for at The Park Estate: a 25m copper beech that had never been pruned, reduced by 20% in height and width without over-stressing the tree. The business is based locally at 20 Prince St in Long Eaton rather than run through a call centre, and customers are invited to ask for George directly if they want to talk a job through before booking it in.
Where We Prune and Trim Trees Around Nottingham
Pruning and trimming jobs run across Nottingham and out to roughly 15-25 miles in every direction from our base at 20 Prince St, Long Eaton, which is also where Jennifer Leahy had ivy cleared from her garden. That radius takes in West Bridgford, Wollaton, Beeston, Bramcote, Ruddington and the Nottinghamshire villages beyond. In West Bridgford's NG2 postcode we removed a large larch for Ruth Nettleship, and in The Park Estate (NG7) -- an area with a lot of mature trees on older, larger plots that had often gone years without attention -- David King had a 25m copper beech reduced by 20% in height and width. Further out towards Derbyshire, we've cut back trees and trimmed hedges for Karl Hall in Alfreton, DE55. The same team also covers Mansfield, Newark-on-Trent, Southwell, Worksop and the other Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire towns within our working area.
Book Your Prune Before the Growing Season Gets Away From You
The dormant season between autumn and early spring is the best window for most pruning and reduction work, before new growth starts and while it's easiest to see exactly which branches need to come out. Waiting until summer can mean stunting that year's growth, and leaving a hazardous limb or an overgrown boundary tree through winter storms is a risk that only gets more expensive to put right. Get in touch for a free quote and we'll get an NPTC-qualified arborist out to look at your tree properly before any work is agreed.

A Few More Pruning and Trimming Questions
Do I need permission to prune a tree in Nottingham?
Not for most routine pruning, but if the tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or sits within a Conservation Area, the council's written consent is needed before any cutting starts, even for a light trim. We check TPO and Conservation Area status as part of the site assessment and can help prepare and submit the application where one's needed. Working on a protected tree without consent is a legal offence that can carry a significant fine, so it's worth checking before a date gets booked in.
How much does tree pruning or trimming cost in Nottingham?
Price depends on the tree's size and species, how much needs to come off, access to the site, and whether there's more than one tree or a hedge to do at the same time. Quotes are free, but an accurate figure needs someone to see the actual tree in person -- photos and phone descriptions can be misleading for anything beyond a small, easily-reached tree, especially once climbing, rigging or a platform is involved.
Are your tree surgeons qualified and insured?
Yes. The team holds City & Guilds NPTC Certificates of Competence covering chainsaw use, climbing and aerial rescue, branch removal and crown breakdown, aerial pruning and rigging, through to felling and emergency treework planning. Full public liability and employers' liability insurance is in place, and documentation is available on request before work starts.
